As a teenager I loved seeing the ladies in church glide in on high stilettos and big umbrella hats! It was something to see. As I grew into a man I knew one day I wanted my own queen to rest on my arm as I walked in, with a hat as large as life and heels that were so high her calves screamed "GLORY" every time she took a stride. The church hat has been the crown of African American women for decades, and though I see it fading fast I still long for the mysterious allure of the hat itself.
Resting upon the heads of powerful women so reserved but whose presence alone could cast out all fear! My preference was always slanted giving you one eye to see. Ha ha ha ha! The mystery of the the woman who only showed you what she wanted you to see, told secrets that only her lover(spouse) could hear through her walk, as she glided. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Yes! the church hat, bent, folded, bowed, ribboned, or laced, the church hat told you things about its wearer that only certain individuals could understand, as the hats had a language all their own.
